What Do You Need to Prepare for a Baby Formula?
✔️ Sterilised bottles with teats and bottle covers
✔️ A clean bottle brush and teat brush
✔️ Baby formula (we recommend Kendamil , naturally)
How to Sterilise Bottles and Feeding Equipment
It’s really important that you sterilise the equipment before making your baby’s bottle to prevent your little one getting poorly. You should be doing this until your baby is at least 12 months old.
You should also sterilise all equipment according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Step 1: Clean Before Sterilising
- Wash bottles, teats and accessories in hot, soapy water
- Use dedicated brushes
- Rinse thoroughly
⚠️ Dishwashers can clean but do not sterilise.
Step 2: Sterilize according to your manufacturer’s instructions
There are three common ways to sterilise; cold water sterilising, steam sterilising and sterilising by boiling.
| Method | How It Works | Key Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cold water sterilising | Soak items in sterilising solution for 30 minutes | Change solution every 24 hours |
| Steam sterilising | Electric or microwave steam | Follow manufacturer’s instructions |
| Boiling | Boil equipment for 10 minutes | Ensure items are heat-safe |
After sterilising:
- Leave items in the steriliser until needed
- Assemble bottles immediately after removal
- Always wash and dry hands first
7 Simple Steps to Preparing Formula Milk
Step 1: Boil Fresh Water
- Fill the kettle with fresh tap water (can be filtered or unfiltered)
- Bring to a rolling boil
💡 If safe tap water is not available (for example, when travelling), bottled water can be used only if:
- Sodium (Na) is below 200 mg per litre
- Sulphate (SO₄) is below 250 mg per litre
Step 2: Cool the Water (No Longer Than 30 Minutes)
After boiling:
- Let the water cool for no more than 30 minutes
- This keeps the water at around 70°C
This balance is key to safe infant feeding.
Step 3: Clean and Sterilise Everything
Before making the bottle:
- Clean and sterilise bottles, teats and caps
- Clean and disinfect the preparation surface
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water
Sterilising equipment is recommended until your baby is at least 12 months old.
Step 4: Add Water First
Always:
- Pour the correct amount of water into the bottle before adding powder
This ensures:
- Correct concentration
- Accurate measurement
Step 5: Add the Exact Number of Level Scoops
- Use only level scoops
- Follow the preparation instructions exactly
❌ Do not:
- Add extra scoops (can cause constipation and dehydration)
- Add extra water
Infant milk is nutritionally complete up to 6 months of age
Step 6: Shake, Cool and Check Temperature
- Secure the bottle and shake gently until fully mixed
- Cool the bottle under running cold water or in a bowl of cold water
- Test temperature on your wrist
✔️ Milk should feel body temperature, not hot
Step 7: Safe Storage and Feeding Times
| Situation | Time Limit |
|---|---|
| Once feeding has started | Use within 1 hour |
| Stored in the fridge | Use within 24 hours |
⚠️ Never:
- Reheat formula
- Reuse unfinished milk
Always discard leftover milk after a feed.
